• Born on January 24, 1925 in Fairfax (Oklahoma), she studied in Los Angeles with Lichine and Nijinska. She was also gifted for music but had to stop playing the piano when she joined the Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo in 1942.
• She got married with George Balanchine in 1946 and premiered many of his ballets (see below). They divorced in 1952.
• In 1947, she danced Serenade, Apollo and Le Baiser de la fée at the Paris Opera.
• She won the Dance Magazine Award in 1960 and the Capezio Award in 1965.
• She was a principal dancer of the New York City Ballet.
